Front desk coverage, shift by shift — what it is, who can pick these shifts up right now, and how to get
access.
What an Admin/Reception shift is
When a dental office is short at the front desk, they can now post that day on TempStars the same way
they’d post a hygiene or assisting shift. You’ll see it in your shift list marked Admin/Reception.
Every admin shift posting spells out exactly what the day involves, so there are no surprises when you
walk in.
Offices pick from a task list, and the four they ask for most often are:
• Answering phones
• Checking patients in
• Taking payments
• Outbound patient calls (confirmations, recalls, rescheduling)
Some shifts also include hygiene coordinating, seating patients, sterilization centre or floater duties. Each
posting also tells you the attire the office expects — business attire, scrubs, or either.
Read the task list before you offer. It’s there so you know what you’re walking into.
Who can pick up admin shifts right now
Admin/Reception temping is a pilot. We launched it in July 2026 and we’re growing it deliberately
rather than all at once.
Piloting now in Ontario and British Columbia, for Dental Assistants.
To see and offer on admin shifts today, you need all four:
Your role Your TempStars profile is a Dental Assistant
Your country You’re in Canada — admin shifts aren’t offered in the U.S.
Your standing Your membership is in good standing (Active, Pro or Elite)
Your choice You’ve opted in to seeing admin shifts (below)
Offices in Ontario and British Columbia are the ones posting admin shifts so far. You can opt in from
anywhere in Canada, but if you’re outside those two provinces you may not see postings yet — that’s the
pilot, not your account.
Registered Dental Hygienists and Associate Dentists don’t have access to admin shifts. If that’s your
profile and front desk work is something you do, read the next section — we’d still like to hear from you.
How to turn admin shifts on
It takes about ten seconds, in the app:
1. Go to Available Shifts.
2. Open the shift type filter and choose Admin/Reception.
3. Agree to the one-time confirmation.
That’s it. Admin shifts will now appear alongside your assisting shifts, and you offer on them exactly the
way you already do — your rate, your availability, your call.
You only ever have to do this once.
Before you take your first one
We want to be straight with you about this, because it matters for you and for the office.
Admin shifts are real front desk work, not assisting work with a different job title. The office is counting
on someone who can run their day: work in their practice management software, check patients out and
take payment, and handle a ringing phone while a patient waits at the counter. Most postings ask for
exactly that.
We’ve had a small number of shifts where a talented, well-liked assistant took an admin shift without
front desk experience, and the day was harder for everyone — including them. Nobody thought less of
them for it. But it wasn’t a good day.
So, honestly: if you’ve done front desk work, we’d love you on these shifts. If you haven’t, no shame
at all in leaving admin off and sticking to assisting until you have. And if a specific posting asks for
something you’re not confident with, skip that one. Read the task list, be honest with yourself, and take
the shifts you can walk into and own.
If you’re a Dental Admin professional — please get in touch
You may be reading this thinking: I’m the person you’re describing, and I can’t opt in.
If you’re a certified Dental Administration professional, or you’ve worked in dental admin or
reception and your TempStars profile isn’t set up as a Dental Assistant, email us at
help@tempstars.com — or start a chat and ask for a ticket.
Tell us:
• The email address on your TempStars account
• Your dental admin certification, if you have one, and/or where you’ve worked front desk and
for how long
• The city and province you’d want to work in
Our Member Success team will look at your account and your credentials and sort out your access from
there. Please don’t create a second account to get around it — duplicate accounts get flagged and it
slows everything down. One email to us is faster.
We’re expanding who can take admin shifts as the pilot grows, and the people who write in are exactly
who we build the next phase around. If we can’t open it up for you today, we’ll tell you plainly and we’ll
come back to you when we can.
Changed your mind?
Don’t want to see admin shifts? Switch the shift type filter back and you’ll only see assisting shifts
again.
Turned them off permanently and now you’d like them back? Email help@tempstars.com and we’ll
switch them back on for you — it takes a minute on our end.
What to expect from a new program
Admin temping is genuinely new. Postings are still limited and concentrated in Ontario, with British
Columbia growing. Being opted in doesn’t mean a full calendar yet — it means you’re in the pool the day
an office near you needs a front desk covered, and the pool is still small enough that you have a real shot
at the shifts that come up.
We’ll keep growing it. Thank you for being early.
