Sometimes we receive feedback from an office that the proposed hourly rate in an offer is higher than the office's budget.
TempStars doesn’t dictate hourly rates at all, although we do provide feedback to those that are submitting offers outside of the normal range.
In the period immediately post-COVID 19 as offices started to re-open, we have noticed the hourly rate for available assistants and hygienists has drifted upwards. This is due to a combination of a variety of factors, which has just affected the job market overall:
1. Summer vacation
2. Nervousness about COVID-19
3. The CERB benefit
4. The RCDSO/CDHO guideline differences
5. Some hygienists/assistants have taken on the expense of procuring their own PPE to ensure they’re able to work in as many offices as possible.
So considering all these factors, we are noticing a trend where there are less available hygienists/assistants for June & July, which naturally increases the hourly rates for those who make themselves available.
We’ve seen a similar but opposite effect when the dental job market was oversaturated with hygienists which drove down their hourly rates, so there just isn’t any escaping this reality.

Just so you’re aware of how features work - if there’s any offer that’s above your office’s budget for an offered hourly rate, simply decline the offer and put “Hourly Rate Above Budget” in the reason section - this will prompt you to enter an acceptable hourly rate for the offer.
The offering hygienist/assistant is then forwarded the feedback and encouraged to re-submit their offer at your specified rate if it’s acceptable.
And just to hopefully further clarify, one of the reasons that TempStars has the largest pool of available hygienists and assistants (by far!) and a reputation for easily and consistently filling temping shifts, is that hygienists and assistants set their own hourly rates, specifically for each offer. So, it all does balance out, we just seem to be in an upward trend at the moment!
